MassHire is seeking businesses in the Westfield area to accept students from Westfield High School as interns. Imanol Cruz, MassHire business services representative said the students, who are mostly juniors and seniors, will be screened, trained and paid by MassHire, and are available to work after school for up to 12½ hours a week. “We are really focused on screening youth to make sure they are 100% ready to get into an experience,” Cruz said, adding if the students aren’t ready, MassHire will still take them into the program and offer them more training. “If the experience isn’t good for the business, it isn’t good for the youth,” he said. Area businesses that are interested in learning more about this program may contact Imanol Cruz directly at icruz@masshireholyoke.org. https://www.masslive.com/westfieldnews/2022/10/masshire-seeks-westfield-businesses-to-participate-in-high-school-internship-program.html

Summer blockbusters at the movie theaters are but a distant memory now but there was a high school girls soccer game well worth the price of admission Thursday. For 80 minutes, Westfield and Ludlow were engrossed in a knock-down, drag-out fight, of sorts, filled with high-flying shots and highlight-reel saves. It all ended with Bombers senior captain Emma Pedro rallying her team with a game-tying goal on a penalty kick with 5:47 remaining in regulation to secure a 1-1 tie. https://www.masslive.com/westfieldnews/2022/09/emma-pedros-late-pk-rallies-westfield-girls-soccer-for-1-1-tie-against-ludlow.html

Eerily similar to their season-opening game against Amherst, the Westfield High School football team found itself on the wrong side in time of possession early on against an opponent. But much like in that first game, Westfield found its footing and experienced another offensive outburst as the game wore on. The Bombers scored six touchdowns over the final three quarters to chase the Pittsfield Generals, 40-6, Friday night in the Whip City. https://www.masslive.com/westfieldnews/2022/09/westfield-football-wears-down-pittsfield-40-6.html

The season is just underway for the Westfield High School girls soccer team but it’s already a bit of a rollercoaster ride for the 2-1 Bombers. Westfield opened the season on a bit of a sour note, falling to Minnechaug 3-0, before enjoying a 6-0 shutout win against Pittsfield. The latest turn involved finishing on the winning side of a nail-biter. Westfield freshman Hannah Callini tallied the game’s only goal against East Longmeadow on Friday with 17:48 remaining in the second half, and the Bombers held off the Spartans for a thrilling 1-0 win. https://www.masslive.com/westfieldnews/2022/09/westfield-girls-soccers-hannah-callinis-lone-goal-sinks-east-longmeadow-1-0.html

Westfield often scored in the blink of an eye during their high school football season opener Friday night at Amherst with two scoring plays of 49 yards or better and five plays of 21 yards or better, but it all added up to one long, drawn-out “W”. Amherst opened the game with a bruising 15-play, 59-yard scoring drive that ate up an astounding eight minutes, 58 seconds. Save for a third quarter score, it was all the Hurricanes could muster though as Westfield stormed past the visitors, 42-15. https://www.masslive.com/westfieldnews/2022/09/westfield-football-spoils-amhersts-friday-night-football-opener.html

Westfield won its second league game in as many days with its second straight shutout, a 7-0 win over visiting Mahar. Shea Hurley got the scoring started and then it was all Meghan Bowen (3 goals) and Gabi Ritter (3 goals), scoring off of rebounds and passes from teammates Norah Bargatti and Karlie Shea. “Mahar did not make it easy for us as they played good defense in the circle and really clogged the middle,” Westfield field hockey coach Jenn Oakland said. “We had to really work the ball around on the outside and find our chances to make quality circle entries.” https://www.masslive.com/westfieldnews/2022/09/the-westfield-news-scoreboard-bombers-field-hockey-posts-second-straight-shutout-more.html
